The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs (FFGC) of which The Orlando Garden Club is a part of, has been sponsoring the WEKIVA YOUTH CAMP every summer since 1974. It is a residential nature camp for 3rd thru 8th Grade youngsters. The Camp instills a love and respect for the REAL Florida in our youth by studying nature, learning about conservation and protection of our environment for the future of our state and our planet.
The Wekiva Youth Camp has six one-week sessions during June & July in Wekiva Springs State Park. FFGC contributes to maintain the facilities along with the Florida Parks Service. The Orlando Garden Club donates each year to assist with sponsorships for campers, camp equipment, etc. for the youth camp. In 2021 OGC contributed funds for two new drinking water fountains.
Our February meeting also included the Green Thumb Circle hosting the luncheon with beautifully decorated tables of flowers, tea cups, tea towels, sandwich plates and orchids. An assortment of sweets, tea sandwiches and fruits were served as well as fresh pots of hot teas served to the members. A lovely luncheon was provided by a small group, most wearing hats or a tiara. Fun afternoon for all!
Our “Audubon Center for Birds of Prey” program was educational and exciting!! A big Thank You to Daisy Fiore, Sr. Educational Coordinator, and her assistant Sabrina! The organization manages sanctuaries that cover thousands of acres along with two popular nature centers; Audubon’s Center for Birds of Prey and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. We were also honored to meet two of their Ambassador Birds!
